Touchdown Studios, situated in the Alpine village of Kranzberg about 45 minutes north
of Munich, was at the time one of Europe's most technically advanced recording and
post-production facilities. Business was mainly music recording and film post-production.
It offered two 48 track rooms both equipped with Neve VRP
total recall consoles, Otari MTR100 analogue and Sony Dash digital multi-tracks, Audio
Kinetics ES1.11/Motionworker synchroniser systems, NED Synclavier and Digidesign
Sound Designer hard disk recorder/editor systems. The mixing room was Dolby 5:1
surround equipped (one of the first studios to install such a system) and the company was
also involved in the development of a soundfield microphone for digital ambisonic
recording in conjunction with AGM Digital Arts of Cambridge, England (field-testing
this system being one of my responsibilities). Plans to build a much larger residential
facility in Portugal drained the company financially however, and Touchdown closed in 1994.
